The State College Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, was formed in 1962 with 30 members. The chapter is headquartered in State College, Pennsylvania, and has members from at least five surrounding counties. The Nittany Knights A Cappella Barbershop Chorus was formed along with a number of quartets.
The State College Chapter is in the Mid-Atlantic District (MAD) of the Society. Our District comprises 83 Chapters from New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia.
The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc., or SPEBSQA, was founded in 1938 by O.C. Cash in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A few years ago, the Society Board wanted to come up with a name that was easier to say and also be better from a marketing standpoint. They decided on "Barbershop Harmony Society". Both names are used today. Society headquarters is located in Nashville, TN (1-800-876-7464). The Society now boasts 800 Chapters with 30,000 members in North America. In the US and Canada there are 17 Districts in which there are a number of Divisions. We are in the Mid-Atlantic District (MAD) and in the Northern Division. BHS has affiliate organizations located in England, Ireland, Germany, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
